Now is the moment to shape the life you desire, but how can you accomplish that? Here’s my best answer: Cultivate the right habits. Let's delve into the precise steps for creating habits that align with the life you envision. Scientifically, habits can be broken down into four key components: cue, craving, response, and reward. Allow me to illustrate with an example. As the day winds down, typically around 2 p.m. or 3 p.m., fatigue sets in. The cue is recognizing the late hour and feeling tired. This triggers a craving for a cookie in the kitchen. The response is to indulge in the cookie, leading to the immediate reward of feeling better and rejuvenated for work. To reshape this habit, we need to introduce a modification. For instance, at that energy dip around 2 or 3 p.m., alternatives might include changing your choice of beverage or exploring different options. Personally, during my afternoon lull, I step away from the computer screen, head to the cafeteria, and opt for an apple. I still engage in a conversation, similar to the cookie scenario, and return to work with a refreshing feeling.
"You need to understand yourself to improve your habits."
Let’s take a step back. Is it the cookie, the apple, or the social interaction that contributes to the reward? By understanding oneself, it becomes apparent that the social aspect is crucial. Instead of fixating on the computer screen, a visit to the water cooler for a brief chat achieves the same reward: renewed energy.
As you dissect your habits, consider subtle adjustments that enhance your well-being over time. Whether it's choosing a different snack or prioritizing social interaction, these incremental improvements compound and elevate your overall experience. Call or email me with any questions. I look forward to hearing from you.
